The Court is open to the public. It is possible to sit in on and observe most cases heard by the Supreme Court Seating is provided in the public gallery, usually at the back of the courtroom.
When entering or leaving a courtroom, it is customary to bow towards the judge. Talking, smoking or eating in court is not permitted.
A judge is in charge of the courtroom and may order the removal of anybody who misbehaves or is dressed inappropriately. You should stand whenever a judge enters or leaves the courtroom.
Mobile telephones and pagers must be turned off before entering the courtroom. Cameras, recording devices, or other electronic equipment are not permitted without the consent of the judge.
The Court usually sits to hear criminal matters from 10am. The Court breaks from 1:00pm to 2:15pm and concludes for the day at 4:15pm Monday to Friday. When prisoners are to be sentenced, the Court may sit at or before 9:30am. The sitting hours for civil cases are generally the same, except hearings usually start at 10:30am. The Court of Appeal sits from 10:30am. Hours do vary so check the newspaper or daily listings to confirm specific hearings.
